The formation of Keshi pearls is unique when compared to the way other kinds of pearls are formed. Keshi pearls are “special” in the sense that they are formed differently.
Pearls are produced by a kind of mollusk like an oyster for example. It is formed by substances that embed themselves inside the oyster. It becomes infected or hurt by these external substances and to heal itself, the oyster produces nacre which coats the shell to stop the irritation. If the pearl is still alive, it will not stop producing and coating the substance with nacre and thus forming a pearl.

On the other hand, formation of Keshi pearls is different. There are 2 possible ways a Keshi pearl is formed and it is nothing alike as what is stated above.

One way is when the oyster spits out or throws out the embedded substance (nucleus) even if it has not yet fully developed into a pearl.

The other way is when the nucleus will break and eventually form two distinct pearl sacs. It may form 1 or 2 pearls with or without nuclei in it.
